The electrician, fought off tough competition from masses of other trades and industries from all corners of the UK, after being nominated for the title by the neighbour of one of his customers. Designed to celebrate the entrepreneurialism of the great British van driver, the competition was open to van or pickup truck driving businesses no matter what their sector. The fact that an electrician has been selected as a regional finalist is a feather in the cap for the electrical trade.

The construction sector is being urged to create more apprenticeships and find ways to attract workers to the sector after new research found that over half of the UK population are struggling to hire a tradesperson.
The study by IronmongeryDirect, surveyed 1,000 people who have required the services of a trade professional over the past year. Results showed that for one in six people (16%), it took more than three weeks to find a suitable tradesperson, while 13% said it took up to two weeks, and almost a quarter (24%) had to search for a week to get someone on board.

Interview with David Blackwell, Belzona Engineering Director
David Blackwell joined Belzona in 1987 after spending 13 years with Shell in the Merchant Navy and rising through the ranks to a Senior Engineering Officer. In Belzona, David has occupied various positions over the years and now heads the company’s Engineering Services Department.
